Nose Piercing Aftercare and Healing Timeline: Nostril and Septum

An artist working in gloves at the JBA Cyprus studio: a sterile, hygienic working environment

A nose piercing, whether a nostril or a septum, is one of the most requested piercings in Kyrenia. The piercing itself takes minutes, but healing takes weeks or even months. Good aftercare during that time lowers the risk of infection and helps the piercing heal straight and settle well.

In this guide we explain the difference between the two types, a rough healing timeline and the daily aftercare steps. This is general information; everyone heals differently. If in doubt, please see a doctor.

—Nostril vs septum: what is the difference?

A nostril piercing goes through the side of the nose, through skin and thin cartilage. It is worn with a small ring or a stud and sits on one side of the face.

A septum piercing passes through the soft tissue just in front of the cartilage that divides the nostrils (the "sweet spot"). Done in the right place, it does not go through cartilage, which is why a septum often heals faster than a nostril. Septum jewellery can also be flipped up and hidden inside the nose.

For both types, correct placement and angle directly affect healing. Choosing an experienced piercer who works with sterile, single-use needles is the first step.

—A rough healing timeline

These are general ranges. Looking healed on the outside does not mean the channel inside has fully matured.

  • First 1–2 weeks: mild swelling, redness, tenderness and a clear-to-yellowish fluid (lymph) are normal. Be careful when blowing your nose or washing your face.
  • Weeks 2–6: swelling goes down, some crusting continues. Many people's septum starts to feel comfortable around this time.
  • Septum: usually heals in about 2–3 months.
  • Nostril: usually 4–6 months, sometimes longer, as cartilage recovers more slowly.

Do not take the jewellery out during this time. Nose piercings can shrink very quickly once the jewellery is removed, sometimes within hours.

—Daily aftercare steps

  1. Wash your hands every time before touching the piercing.
  2. Use sterile saline once or twice a day. A plain sterile wound-wash spray from a pharmacy, with nothing added, is the easiest option. Spray, wait a minute or two, then gently pat dry with clean gauze or paper towel.
  3. Don't pick at crusts. They soften and come away on their own in the shower.
  4. Don't twist or move the jewellery. The old "turn it so it doesn't stick" advice damages the wound.
  5. Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide and harsh soaps. They dry out the tissue and slow healing.
  6. Keep make-up and face creams away from the piercing, especially around a nostril.

—Sleeping and everyday life

What stresses a nose piercing most is small, everyday contact. In the first weeks:

  • Pillow: try not to sleep on the nostril side and change your pillowcase often.
  • Getting dressed: take care not to catch the jewellery when pulling jumpers and T-shirts over your head.
  • Phone and hands: phones and hands carry a lot of germs during the day; clean the phone you hold to your face and keep your fingers off the piercing.
  • Sport: protect your nose during contact sports and rinse with clean water after sweating.

—Living in Cyprus: what to watch out for

Summer in Kyrenia is long and the sea is right on our doorstep. During the first weeks of healing:

  • Stay out of the sea and swimming pools. Sea water isn't sterile and pool chlorine irritates the tissue. Avoiding them completely for the first few weeks is safest; ask your piercer about later on.
  • Sun and sweat: rinse off sweat with clean water in the heat and don't leave the piercing in strong sun for long.
  • Dust and wind: an extra saline rinse after a day outdoors helps.

—When something isn't normal

Some signs need a doctor:

  • pain, swelling and redness that get worse over the days,
  • dark yellow, green or bad-smelling discharge,
  • warmth around the piercing, fever or feeling unwell,
  • noticeable swelling or pain inside the nose with a septum.

If you suspect an infection, don't remove the jewellery yourself; a closing hole can trap the infection inside. See a doctor first, then talk to your piercer. For more detail, read our guide on infection vs normal healing.

Another common issue with nose piercings is a small bump next to the hole (an irritation bump). It is usually caused by the jewellery rubbing, pressure while sleeping or the wrong aftercare product, and it usually settles once the cause is removed. If it doesn't, show it to your piercer.

—Choosing and changing jewellery

The material of your first piece of jewellery directly affects healing. Implant-grade titanium and similar body-safe materials cause the least irritation; we explain why in our guide to piercing jewellery materials.

Your first piece may be slightly longer to allow for swelling. Once the swelling has gone down it may need to be downsized; ask the studio about timing and size. Don't switch to decorative jewellery before the piercing has fully healed.

—Frequently Asked Questions

Does a nose piercing hurt a lot?
Most people describe a short, sharp sting followed by a few days of tenderness. Pain varies from person to person, and the procedure itself is very quick.

Which heals faster, nostril or septum?
A well-placed septum usually heals faster (about 2–3 months). A nostril usually takes 4–6 months.

Can I blow my nose?
Yes, but gently. Try not to rub the tissue against the piercing or catch the jewellery.

When can I change my jewellery?
Once it has fully healed. Having your piercer do the first change is the safest option.

Will glasses or a face mask cause problems?
If they rub against a nostril piercing they can irritate it. Try to reduce the friction, and contact the studio if the problem continues.

—Final thoughts

A nose piercing heals without trouble when it is done properly and looked after patiently. The basic rule is simple: clean hands, sterile saline, hands off the jewellery, and patience.
